Bus Travel

For bus travel from Hanoi to Quang Binh, we recommend using Hung Thanh Bus Company. You can easily purchase tickets at Vietnam Backpacker Hostels (also known as Hanoi Backpackers Hostel), conveniently located at 9 Ma May or 48 Ngo Huyen in the Old Quarter, where the staff speaks English. Arrive at Hanoi Backpackers Hostel by 6:00 PM, where you will meet the bus. From there, the bus will make a short stop at the company office to pick up other guests before departing at 7:00 PM for Quang Binh (Phong Nha or Dong Hoi).

Alternatively, you can call Hung Thanh Bus directly or book tickets at their office at 162B Tran Quang Khai St. (Phone: 04.39274284 / 04.39274285). It is difficult to purchase tickets in advance before arriving in Hanoi, so it’s best to buy your ticket in person or via phone once you’re in Hanoi.

The sleeper bus is comfortable, air-conditioned, and occasionally equipped with Wi-Fi, though this can’t be guaranteed. There’s a small toilet at the back of the bus, and you’ll make a stop near Ninh Binh, where basic toilet facilities are available.

The ticket price is approximately VND 250,000 from Hanoi to Phong Nha (prices may increase during major holidays such as Tet, International Labor Day, and Vietnamese National Day).

• Phong Nha: The bus stops at Thanh Phat Hotel (opposite Easy Tiger Hostel) between 4:00 – 5:00 AM.
• Dong Hoi: The bus stops at 165 Ly Thuong Kiet Street between 4:00 – 5:00 AM.

The Hung Thanh Bus Company also operates a route from Phong Nha/Dong Hoi to Hanoi, departing from the same locations. You can buy tickets at Thanh Phat Hotel or 165 Ly Thuong Kiet Street in Dong Hoi. Contact: (052) 3851 995 / (052) 3851 996.

Train Travel

Traveling by train offers a comfortable and scenic way to see Vietnam’s countryside. We recommend booking a ticket in a soft-sleeper cabin, which has four beds per cabin, offering enough space to sit up or lie down comfortably. A hard-sleeper cabin, which has six beds per room, does not offer enough space to sit up. Overnight trains are an excellent option, as you can travel while you sleep, allowing you to wake up refreshed and ready for the next day.

Air Travel

For the quickest option, flying from Hanoi to Dong Hoi is the easiest, with a flight time of just 1 hour and 25 minutes. However, keep in mind that you will need to account for travel time to the airport (approximately 1 hour from the Old Quarter). We recommend checking the Vietnam Airlines website in advance to ensure availability for your desired travel dates. If flying is not an option, we suggest taking the train or bus instead.
