A watchtower was erected above the main gate, and additional earthworks and water moats were added to fortify the structure. The Dong Hai Fort was also expanded to provide further protection for the region.

During the Vietnam War, it suffered severe damage, particularly in 1961, when part of the monument, including the gate, was restored to its original design. Today, the monument stands almost completely restored, with the nearby Dong Hoi Citadel also undergoing reconstruction, including the preservation of three gates and a section of the southern city wall, with its water moat almost entirely intact.
